Spider Man 2
12/12/05 3:52:13 PM
Out of all the action/sci-fi movies I've seen, this the best! The acting, script and, most importantly, the action sequences are all great. It is definently an improvement over the first movie. I think the best acting came from Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. Here is a man that used to be a polite, kindly person who was turned into a monster with 4 metallic, snake-like tentacles grafted to his body. The villain in the first movie, the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), wore a demonic green mask and a Power Rangers-style body suit that struck me as fake and stupid. Spider Man 3 is coming out in May, 2007. Can't wait to see it!

This is the best Science Fiction film released this year. It also happens to be the best action film and the best comedy film released this year. This movie will take you on a two hour roller coaster ride. It will make you laugh and cry and gasp and when it ends you'll want to see it again. Don't miss it.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
8/1/05 12:13:45 PM
While this version was not like the original, some people have said it "didn't have enough heart." Thankfully, the children were not dumbed-down sterotypes. Granted, they had their problems. But the main characters (Charlie and Willy Wonka) were equals.
This movie sends a wonderful message to any audience and I belive it might sound like this: respect your elders for you can learn from their mistakes and never underestimate youth for it will
always surprise you.
I highly recommend this movie. However leave your dogma at the door because everything evolves.

Stealth
8/1/05 12:10:55 PM
After just seeing Stealth I have to admit that I was pleasently surprised. The special effects were great, the plot was suspenseful, and the cast was well fit for their roles.
Some of the best parts of the movie were the aerial fight scenes, and the director pulls them off in such a way that you really feel like you're riding one of those futuristic stealth jets. The plot and the characters have depth and a conscience which allows the film to rise above the status of just another summer action flick. Even Eddie, the unmanned stealth fighter has his own battles with what's right from what's wrong.
I'm dumfounded how critics that saw the movie didn't enjoy it, or criticize it for being a Top Gun vs. Hal from 2001 crossover, thus oversimpliflying the plot, and making an incorrect comparison. One critic even wrote that it's only for testosterone craving guys, and this couldn't be further from the truth. I personally saw the movie with two women that loved the film, and can't wait for it to come out on dvd.
So if you're looking for a movie that breaks the mold of the Hollywood cookie cutter engine. And you're craving something fresh and new. Then go see Stealth and have a good time at the movies.

Fantastic 4
7/14/05 11:37:57 AM
Well after getting riveted scene after scene in "War of the Worlds," it was a great change of pace to see superheros bickering with each other and saving the day all at the same time.
I grew up with watching "The Fantastic Four" on Saturday mornings (the old Hanna-Barbera production) and even that old show displayed some of the conflicts we see prominently on the screen. It looks as if the Marvel Comics legacy continues in fine form, especially watching Michael Chiklis' all-too human performance as Ben Grimm (a.k.a. the Thing). All in all, it was a perfect summertime movie, even if we've been innundated with remakes. Let's "flame on" to the sequel!! Grade:A-

The new war of the worlds movie was a severe disappointment. The new elements which were added to the plot just muddled it up.

Flop Of The Worlds
7/5/05 10:06:49 AM
The original "War of The Worlds" was better.
The ships were cooler looking, and there were more battle scene's between the army and the martian ships.
The original showed how the military kept uping their weapons - finally to the atom bomb and still nothing worked and with a subplot of the futility of the scientists to come up with something in time.
This movie was some special effects, but mostly tom Cruise trying to narrowly escape death a dozen times. And why did they need human blood?

"Batman Begins" Is An Awesome Flick
6/16/05 10:32:43 AM
"Batman Begins" is what the first movie released in 1989 (as well as every other Bat movie since) should have aspired to.
Great plot, excellent effort on the part of the actors, especially Christian Bale and Michael Caine.
Hopefully, Morgan Freeman is back for the sequel as Lucious Fox.
Nice plot twist towards the end of the movie.
I saw it at the Channelside IMAX, but I'll go see it again on a regular moview screen since I couldn't always make out what was going on in the close up hand-to-hand combat scenes.
As much as I enjoyed "Spider-Man 2" last summer, "Batman Begins" establishes a new standard for comic book-based movies.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
6/9/05 2:35:40 PM
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is a terrific summer movie, which has fun without insulting your intelligence.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have great chemistry, often sparring with words and weapons.
Director Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity") keeps the pace fast and furious, as several action sequences, including an incredible car chase.
Thankfully, the film has a great sense of humor, for better ("The OC's) Adam Brody sports a "Fight Club" T-shirt opposite Brad Pitt) or for worse (while the film takes place in New York, signs marking Los Angeles city limits appear during the car chase).
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is a total blast, and probably one of the better offerings this summer at the cineplex.

"High Tension"
6/9/05 2:31:52 PM
Being widely hailed in horror circles as the best movie of its kind in years, "High Tension" is quite disappointing in how typical it all is.
The director claims that he made this as a tribute to American slasher cinema of the '70s, but it doesn't show in his film.
Another point of interest is the first half's uncanny resemblence to the plot of Dean Koontz' novel "Intensity," with which the author receives no credit.
While the initial violence is hardcore and brutal in nature, nothing else justifies the bare plot and pathetic cliche of a twist ending, which only succeeds in tearing plot holes wide open.
To add insult to injury, the majority of the film is dubbed, with the main role being voiced by the original actress, resulting in a strong accent on her voice and mismatched lips with everyone else's.
On occasion, dialogue is simply subtitled, leaving for an awkward mix. "High Tension" is not a terrible horror film, nor is it a terrific one.
While certain sequences nearly touch greatness, the entire film reeks of coulda-shoulda-woulda potential. In the end, it's just not that scary.

Nothing like a movie that shows Christians as the bad guys who apparently like picking fights.
Also apparently the Christian God never seems to care, while the holy war brought on by God of Islam is pretty important so you better surrender.
Oh, I guess it was a good thing to surrender to the enemy back then, judging by all the cheers and pats on the back by the "defenders."
Really a solid waste of my time and money.

"Hotel Rwanda"
5/10/05 1:14:18 PM
When a movie causes you to criticize not only your race but the country you reside in, you know it is good. The struggle between the Hutus and Tutsis people is portrayed so well that one wonders why Westerners did nothing to aid them. Joaquin Phoenix's minor role supports these feelings when he falls in love and cannot stay to protect her. He says that the footage he shot would play around the world and most would see it and sat that it was terrible and continue eating their TV dinners. If you are not afraid to see a movie that makes you think and perhaps makes you angry with your country, Hotel Rwanda is a must see film.

My father is not fond of movies that have excessive violence and gore, and neither do I.
Just the other day he was talking about how when he use to watch movies in a theater and saw a gory scene he’d say "That’s it!"and get up and leave. He aptly calls these movies ‘garbage films’.
I made the mistake of watching "Hostage" before reading any reviews, and so, I found myself watching a garbage film.
There is no value of entertainment or value to society by making a movie like "Hostage."
Why inflict upon the public images of kids being killed, people being shot at point-blank, and the ever-present brains being blown out of ones head?
Regardless if the public wants to see this or not, they shouldn’t.
It does not help breed a healthy society.
Stay away from this movie.

Depp Finds Excellence In "Finding Neverland"
12/31/04 11:28:42 AM
Johnny Depp is amazing in this movie. He is a sure candidate for Best Actor in the Oscar race.
The movie was just great on all cylinders. Kate Winslett gave a great performance as Sylvia, but the one that stole the show was Depp. Depp plays J.M. Barrie in the film, the author of the play Peter Pan.
In the movie, Barrie meets Sylvia, a widowed mother of four, in the park. He talks to her kids and forms a bond with the family.
All the while his wife does not like the fact that he is spending more time with them than he does with her. While being associated with the kids, he is influenced to write a story. He uses the name of one of the boys as the title. He also influences Sylvia's son Peter to write stories and use his imagination.
The kids play a huge role in the story and aside from Depp's performance of J.M. Barrie, the kids were the best thing in the movie. Dustin Hoffman must really like Peter Pan. I mean he was in Hook and now he's in Finding Neverland. That's gotta say something. But all in all, this was a great movie and it is a sure nomination for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

All-Star Cast Scores Big In 'Ocean's Twelve'
12/28/04 2:26:21 PM
Now some sequels never live up to the hype of the movie that was made before them.
For instance, Austin Powers,The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, or Kill Bill, all of these good movies had bad sequels (in my opinion).
Only some will have a great one like Shrek or the Godfather. Ocean's 12, the sequel to Ocean's 11, wasn't that bad.
It wasn't as good as the first one, but it was fun to watch. To me, one of the key things was it started right were it left off. That really helped the movie alot.
The cast was terrific. Seeing George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, not to mention Julia Roberts, Catherine-Zeta Jones, Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia, and Bernie Mac all on the same screen was awesome.
The movie's music was great to listen to, and the setting of Italy was sweet. All in All, it was a pretty good movie.

Of all of Tim Allen's christmas movies, this one was seriously bad.
He had a great christmas movie like "The Santa Claus", but this one was downright shameful.
Now I love movies and I love Christmas. I just felt bad while I was watching this movie though.
It seemed as if every other cast member knew that the movie was bad. But not all of it was bad.
I thought that Tim Allen was funny as always. Jamie Lee Curtis did a good job as Nora, but the rest of the movie was not funny and just didn't get me in the mood for the holidays.

Hop On This Merry Express

This year not many holiday films have been good. But one movie stood out this year, even though its competition wasn't that great.
You had Ben Affleck's stinker "Surving Christmas", which came out in October, and "Christmas with the Kranks".
The movie that stood out was "The Polar Express" with Tom Hanks playing 5 characters.
The animation in the movie was excellent. It looked as though real people were in it, not animated characters.
It will be an instant family holiday classic. both the kids and adults will enjoy it. Tom Hanks does a wonderful job. It was a great movie and everybody can enjoy it.

"Alexander"
11/30/04 9:31:50 AM
I'm not saying "Alexander" is the greatest movie ever made, but as far as history, this is about all many Americans will ever find out about the details of Alexander the Great's conquest of the Middle East and India (not to mention Greek culture on the heels of it's golden age)...and it actually ties into current events.

"Finding Neverland"

Terrific movie with lots of emotion, relationships and imagination.
The child actors are great and Johnny Depp is outstanding as always.
I love the parallel imageries of imagination in the beginning with the dancing bear and at the end with Neverland.
I rate it an A.

"Alexander" A Train Wreck
11/23/04 11:15:33 AM
Oliver Stone's "Alexander" is a train wreck of a motion picture. It is overlong, boring, bloody but not exciting and overtly gay.
It is nearly 3 hours long, and could easily been a half hour shorter if Alexander, played by Colin "look at me, I'm acting now!" Ferrell, had shut up once in a while. Same with Anthony "How did I get myself into this mess" Hopkins. Way too much talking. Most of Hopkins, who plays Ptolomy, is neccessary to tell the story, but it could have been condensed.
The battle scenes were ok, but not nearly as good as "Gladiator." They were bloody enough, but sometimes almost too much, and not all that gripping.
The film is filled with homo erotic scenes. No frontal male nudity or sex scenes, but plenty of everything else. It was part of Alexanders life, but I thought it was over emphasized. I would not recommend this movie for anyone under 17.
The accents were confusing. Some tried, some didn't and some tried and gave up halfway through the movie. There was one Scottish brogue that was almost comical near the end of the flick. Most of the women had what seemed like Eastern-European accents.
The movie teases you, making you think the good part is right around the corner, but it never comes. It gets worse. Near the end of it, during the battle in India, I was suddenly watching a Monty Python movie. The only thing lacking was the Black Knight hobbling around on his severed stumps.
OK, now to say something nice. The CGI depiction of Babylonia was beautiful. It captured the full splendor of what the city must have looked like.
Please do yourself a favor and see something else this weekend.

The Incredible "Incredibles"
11/18/04 3:55:13 PM
I thought that the movie "The Incredibles" was a delightful film for all to see. It had jokes for kids and jokes for adults.
Now even though it was rated PG, the first Pixar film ever to be rated like that, it still is a good film.
The animation, like all Pixar movies, was fantastic. The action in the movie was good for a children's film.
Oh yeah, Samuel L. Jackson is in it too. Now how could you pass that up. It was a great film and s sure contender for the Best Animated Movie of the year. It was that incredible.

Ray: The Best Movie of the Year
11/18/04 3:52:49 PM
"Ray" was an amazing film. I was so captivated by Jamie Foxx's performance that I thought that Foxx was Ray Charles. The best part of the movie had to have been the music, with all of Charles' classic songs.
The thing that really blew my mind was that Foxx played the piano the whole time and sang some of the songs.
If Foxx doesn't get the Best Actor award, the people at the Academy should be slapped. It was amazing. Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell give some of the best acting a supporting cast needs. King was phenomenal every time she came on the screen. Larenz Tate did a wonderful job as Quincy Jones.
"Ray" is a great movie for all to enjoy and it was a beautiful tribute to one of America's greatest muscians. So go see it.

Birth
11/1/04 11:18:43 AM
Upon reading about "Birth", I expected "Chances Are" meets "The Sixth Sense" - an odd and interesting mix, to be sure - but neither as odd nor as interesting as the movie actually was.
It's not often that I see a movie that veers so far from "formula" that it's truly surprising, not only in its outcome but in its very conception.
Therein lies both its strength and ultimately its weakness.
It was clear from the reactions in the theater, from Bob Ross' review and TBO's online ratings, that it's something that you either "get" or you don't. Not "get" in the sense of a firm conclusion, for the ending is indeed intentionally murky. Ross' comments about that nearly led me not to see the film, but I'm glad I did.
While I despise movies that leave uncertain endings due to lack of imagination or effort, this one offered an ending where the questions are more compelling than the answers; and where the possible answers, if you do want them, indeed are there.
I'd recommend this movie highly, with the qualification that it's a gamble: you're probably either going to love it or hate it. If nothing else, see it for the stellar performances of Nicole Kidman and Cameron Bright.

Ray

I felt the movie "Ray" was one of the best and Jamie Fox did an outstanding job.
They did a great job showing Ray Charles with a troubled past and did not try to sugarcoat his life.

Surviving Christmas

While October is a little early for release, the movie was light and entertaining and does get one into the holiday spirit. Ben Afleck is very charming, handsome and makes the film worthwhile.
