Redfish, sheepshead among top targets

GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.

Downtown fishing has been good around the Tampa Bay area.

In downtown Tampa, redfish and sheepshead have been the main targets around the docks and structure. Use shrimp for bait. Lots of silver trout are in the Hillsborough River by the Davis Islands boat ramp and in the residential canals.

Captain Chris Wiggins is catching good speckled trout and redfish around downtown St. Petersburg. Live shrimp is the best bait.

Mangrove snapper and sheepshead have been hot along the rock jetty at Demen’s Landing.

Jason and John Accardi, and friends, celebrated their birthdays fishing with captain Billy Miller. Easy limits of big speckled trout were caught using shrimp on the deep grass of Fort De Soto.

Lots of catch-and-release gag grouper are being caught by anglers fishing for sheepshead, according to Maximo Marina. Shallow bay rock piles, docks and the Sunshine Skyway bridge are the hot spots.

Captains Arik Bergerman and Ryan Farner reported great action on big kingfish in Key West, with many over 40 pounds and some into the 50s.

Anglers using big blue runners, fishing near The Marquesas, have been doing the best. The 100- to 200-foot depths near Sand Key Light have been thick with sailfish.
