Range Rover touts off- and on-road prowess

THE RIDE: Four-door, five-passenger 2011 Range Rover Sport Supercharged midsize SUV. DOWN THE ROAD: A carryover from 2010, the integrated body-framed Range Rover exhibits quick and smooth acceleration from any speed. Indeed, it's noteworthy that the nearly 6,000-pound vehicle can go 0 to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. TECH & PERFORMANCE: A 5.0-liter supercharged and inter-cooled V-8 engine belts out 510 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 461 pounds-feet of torque @ 2500 rpm. It is mated to an efficient 6-speed automatic transmission. A permanent all-wheel drive delivers necessary torque to the rear wheels. Using the exclusive Terrain Response system, pick one of the following as per road/weather conditions: general (for daily driving), grass/gravel/show, mud/ruts, sand, rock crawl and dynamic. Credit an independent front MacPherson strut and a rear double wishbone suspension for a remarkably supple ride. Behind the wheels hide large ventilated 15 inches front and 14.3 inches rear ventilated rotors. LOOK & FEEL: The clamshell hood of the Range Rover meets up with a massive but striking horizontal grille surrounded by circled LED headlights and power side vents. The cabin is decked in typical Land Rover fashion with clear and rounded instrument gauges, straightforward climate, navigation and entertainment controls, and supportive seats. An eight-way power adjustable front seat along with a tilt and telescopic steering column can accommodate the largest of drivers. Space abounds inside with a dual glove box, huge center console and a decently sized trunk area. Other standard amenities include dual zone automatic climate control, power sun roof, heated front/rear seats, 240-watt harman/kardon sound system and a 7-inch LCD screen.
SAFETY FIRST: Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution, hill descent control, side door impact beams, Electronic Stability and traction control, anti-rollover system, front crumple zones, two-speed Electronic Transfer case, limited-slip center differential and tire pressure monitoring system are standard. OUT THE DOOR: $74,545, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 275/40R20; wheelbase, 113.3 inches; length, 188.3 inches; weight, 5,816 pounds; fuel capacity, 23.3 gallons; city, 12 mpg; highway, 17 mpg; website, landrover.com WHY DIG IT: The Range Rover Sport boasts off- and on-road capabilities in an agile, luxury-packed ride.
