Each week, the Tribune prep sports staff selects a Male and Female Athlete of the Week. The selections are based on athletic performance. For video, visit TBO.com/sports/preps to meet our athletes of the week
Jimmy Jones, Freedom
WHY WE CHOSE HIM: The senior golfer shot a nine-hole school-record score of 33 during a win against King at Tampa Palms last week. The score was also a high school career best for Jones, whose mother, Dawn Coe-Jones, played on the LPGA Tour for 25 years. Jones' best overall finish was a 31 at Hunter's Green.
COLLEGE PLANS: Jones has verbally committed to Florida Southern, choosing the Division II powerhouse over offers from Cincinnati, Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville.
Maggie Parrish, Chamberlain
WHY WE CHOSE HER: Despite battling a cold all week, the sophomore runner won the girls race at the Central Hillsborough Invitational in 20 minutes, 29.8 seconds. Chamberlain finished 1-2 in the race but placed second behind Wharton. Just a few days before the Central 5k, Parrish finished fourth at the Newsome Invitational in 20:31.
COLLEGE PLANS: Though just a sophomore, Parrish has already received interest from college programs. She would like to attend an in-state school and major in either integrative biology or environmental biology.
