PLANT CITY – Children 5 to 15 can compete for prizes at a fish derby from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at a pond near Plant City Stadium.
Anglers compete in age groups in such categories as largest fish and most fish caught. There is no registration fee, and prizes include trophies, tackle boxes and rods, Recreation and Parks Department Program Manager Deborah Haldane said.
Registration on the day of the derby will be held 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and awards will be handed out at 11:15 a.m.
Participants must be accompanied by an adult. They also must bring their own pole and bait and 5-gallon bucket to transport their catch live to the weigh station so the fish can be weighed, photographed and released.
The Recreation and Parks Department holds free fishing derbies twice a year in the pond off Gordon Food Drive.
Sponsors include Landshark Charters, Fred’s Market Restaurant, Johnson Barbeque, It Starts in the Parks, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, T.A. Mahoney Co. Inc. and Culprit fishing tackle company.
