Plant City mayor proclaims Donate Life Month’
PLANT CITY - Mayor Mike Sparkman encouraged Plant City residents to consider signing up as organ donors as part of National Donate Life Month in April. The proclamation said that 28,000 Americans receive a lifesaving organ transplant each year, and that more than 117,000 people are currently on a national waiting list for an organ transplant. Valrico resident Gerard Williams accepted the proclamation from Sparkman. Williams said his late daughter received a kidney transplant on two occasions before her death in 2004. Williams said his daughter, Veronica Williams, had lupus and died when she was 40 years old while awaiting a third transplant. He said he has been a volunteer since 1982 of LifeLink Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes organ and tissue transplants.
