PLANT CITY Kimberly and Jerry Hatley, who started landscaping from scratch after buying their home in 1987, have won the Plant City Garden Club’s September beautification award.
The couple only had a dead oak tree on the property when they started landscaping their garden. Jerry built bird feeding stations and Kimberly put her talents to work in the designing of the garden.
The landscaping includes hedges of boxwood on the front of the home and arbors with wisteria and cape honeysuckle.
Their yard includes plants that are hard to grow in this area, such as sea grape and royal poinciana. They also have such flowering plants as plumbago, pink hibiscus and red cannas, just to name a few.
The couple doesn’t have an irrigation system and waters only when needed.
The Garden Club has been awarding monthly beautification awards for several years.
