Plant City High reunion organizers want era photos
PLANT CITY - Organizers of a reunion for 17 graduating classes at Plant City High School are asking their former classmates for photos from the era for a slideshow that will be shown at the event. LaVerne Burkett Cribbs, co-chairwoman of the Planters Reunite reunion, said members of each class from 1956 to 1972 are being asked to supply photos. The shots can be of the former classmates or school events, including off campus photos. About two dozen former classmates gathered last week to talk about plans for the reunion, which will be July 27 at the Arthur Boring Building on the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds. At least 300 graduates and guests are needed for the event to break even with expenses, Cribbs said. She hopes about 400 people will attend, including former teachers. The 1956-72 classes share a bond in that they attended Plant City High when the school was located on what’s now the Tomlin Middle School campus. Those graduates were also the final classes to use Planters as the school mascot. Plant City High opened its current campus in 1972-73 as the school district consolidated and closed high schools in the area. The mascot became the Raiders at the time of the move. The reunion will be 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and tickets are $40 per person, which includes a buffet of beef and chicken entrees, veggies, salad, rolls, coffee, tea and dessert. Teachers are admitted free. Registration deadline is July 6. Background music featuring tunes from the 1956-72 period will be played during the reunion, said Lynda Rogers Fuller, who is co-chairwoman of the reunion.
