Fundraiser at winery to help families of construction workers killed on job

PLANT CITY – Live music, drawings and locally produced wine will be among the features of a May 1 benefit for families of construction workers who are killed on the job.

Sims Crane and Equipment of Tampa will host the May Day Spring Fling for the Tampa Bay Chapter of Construction Angels at Keel and Curley Winery, 5210 Thonotosassa Road. It is the first fundraiser in the Tampa area for Construction Angels, which is based in Fort Lauderdale where it was founded three years ago.

The fundraiser will take place at the winery from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will feature strawberry and blueberry wine, live music, an auction and drawings. Tickets are $25 online or $30 at the door.

Dean Sims II, vice president of marketing at Sims and founder of the Tampa Bay chapter said that he joined the nonprofit six months ago as a way to bring the organization into the Tampa Bay area.

“We provide immediate financial assistance for accident related construction fatalities,” he said.

According to recent reports, accident-related construction fatalities while on the job have risen.

“With all of the industry’s dedication to safety education and safety on the job, the fact that on-site deaths in the construction industry are on the rise is of major concern to everyone involved,” Sims said. “And the reality is, in most cases, the families of loved ones killed on the job need all the financial help they can get. That’s where Construction Angels comes in.”

Sims said the chapter plans to offer aid and counseling to spouses and children who lost a loved one during an on-site accident related fatality.

“One of the really cool things we’re going to do in Tampa is provide social service resources,” he said. “We want to help them recover emotionally as well as financially.”
