Florida Strawberry Festival baby parade is cute and raises money for needy children

PLANT CITY Dozens of young children charmed their way into the hearts of judges and the audience at the annual Florida Strawberry Festival Baby Parade.

Some youngsters rode floats while others walked across the viewing area dressed in style and accompanied by a parent at the Saturday contest. The youngsters, up to 4 years old, competed in age groups for Best Personality, Best Costume, Best Float and Most Beautiful/Handsome.

Organized by the Plant City Junior Woman’s Club, the money from entry fees goes to help children in need.

“All money raised goes toward our annual shoe project,” parade chairwoman and club member Natasha Davis said. “We put shoes and socks on over 600 students in elementary schools in Plant City.”

Davis said the number of contestants had risen to 133, which was up from last year.

Contestants were able to interact with judges, wave from floats or show off their costumes. Florida Strawberry Festival Queen Jessi Rae Varnum and her court members and Little Miss Plant City court members handed out the trophies.

Court members selected at the competition in the festival’s stadium area included Jayden McDaris, King; Bailey Keys, Queen; Maddox Eben, Best Personality; Carson Hattaway, Best Float; and Angel Jarvis; Best Costume.

Many of the contestants’ parents see the event as a fun time in keeping with local tradition.

Shana Warner, whose son Brexten Warner won first place in the 2-year-old age division for Most Handsome, recalled participating in local pageants growing up with her family.

“It’s family tradition.” she said, “I was in Little Miss Plant City and Florida Strawberry Festival queen pageant in high school.”
