PLANT CITY – Dart Container Corp. expects to open a nearly 400,000 square-foot distribution center by mid-2014, according to the company and city records.
The company has filed plans to build on an 84-acre site at 1605 Turkey Creek Road. It’s a short distance from Dart’s nearly 500,000 square-foot factory on Airport Road that makes foam cups and lids.
The new building will become a distribution center for a variety of products produced by the global company.
Dart recently purchased Solo Cups, and some of the Solo brand products will be distributed from the new Plant City location.
Jimmy Rigdon, manager of Dart’s Plant City factory, said the company hopes to start construction in a few weeks. He said he wasn’t sure if Dart would add more jobs beyond the 260-person work force now employed at 4610 Airport Road.
The plans for the distribution center are under routine review by the planning and zoning department.
Dart is based in Michigan and with its 2012 purchase of Solo Cups now has 39 factories here and abroad, including in Brazil and Australia. Dart has 17,000 employees around the globe.
Dart’s factory at 4610 Airport Road opened about 30 years ago.
