PLANT CITY – Motorists received an early Christmas gift from state highway builders.
The extension of Alexander Street from Interstate 4 to State Road 39 opened to traffic on Dec. 23, a few months earlier than expected. Some work continues, but motorists can drive the entire length of the new road, a distance of about 2.6 miles.
All the work should wrap up by April, Florida Department of Transportation spokesman David Botello said.
The state is spending nearly $14.8 million on the project, including the purchase of homes and buildings in the road’s path.
The four-lane road has features to improve travel times, such as traffic lights in only two locations: at Sam Allen Road and Knights-Griffin Road.
Alexander formerly reached a dead end at I-4. The project has been in the planning and development stage for years.
