PLANT CITY - The Plant City Community Chorale will honor the U.S. armed services and veterans in an annual concert celebrating Independence Day.
“A Tribute to Our Heroes” will be presented June 28 at the First Presbyterian Church, 404 Reynolds St. Admission is free but concert attendees are asked to give a donation which will go toward the Fisher House Foundation.
“We always give a patriotic concert and this year we’re using that venue to recognize the men and women in our Armed Forces,” said Dianne Silliman, board secretary for the chorale.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30. Concert-goers will need a reserved admission ticket to get in as space is limited.
“It’s our hope that since we are not selling tickets donations will be higher than our normal $10 fee,” Silliman said.
Silliman explained this is the first year the chorale has chosen the Fisher House Foundation as the beneficiary of money raised through the annual patriotic concert. The foundation provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military and VA medical centers.
Silliman said the idea to donate the proceeds to the foundation was inspired by the chorale’s executive director, Joyce Nestor, who knows someone who benefited from the Fisher House.
“Sometimes our veterans have to travel to get their treatment,” Silliman said. “We like that the Fisher House Foundation has comfortable residences for them and their families while they’re getting well.”
The concert will recognize all branches of the military and an array of well-known patriotic songs will be performed including “The Star Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
“There’s just wonderful patriotic information that they’re going to glean from this,” Silliman said.
