Water pollution closes Courtney Campbell Causeway beach
Swimmers should stay out of the water at Courtney Campbell Causeway beach because of high concentrations of fecal pollution, Pinellas officials said Friday. Results of water testing at the beach on Wednesday showed high levels of enteric bacteria, which is found in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals and indicates fecal pollution, officials from the Pinellas County Health Department said. The bacteria may cause disease, infections or rashes in humans. Pinellas officials routinely test water quality at area beaches through the Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program. The water will be tested again on Jan. 7 and officials will determine whether to lift the advisory based on those results. Water quality classifications are based on the Environmental Protection Agency's recommendations.
