Students at Title 1 schools can get a free book and school supplies at the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg’s Title 1 Family Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The event will be held at the Jim and Heather Gills YMCA at 3200 First Ave. S. in St. Petersburg.
Attendees will be entered to win an iPad or a six-month membership to the YMCA. Students can run an inflatable obstacle course, play video games and take part in other activities while their parents learn more about Title 1 schools.
Forty-nine Pinellas County schools qualify for Title 1 funding, federal aid for elementary and secondary schools with a high population of low-income students. That money is used to fund extra tutoring efforts, instructional activities and other programs meant to “ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.
