St. Pete police: Man stabbed during fight over infidelity

Two men fought over apparent marital infidelity involving one of their wives early this morning, leaving one man stabbed, St. Petersburg police said. At about 5:30 a.m., William Matthews, 52, answered a knock at his apartment door at 344 Fourth St. S., and was confronted by Oscar Velazquez, 41, and a second man. Matthew knew Velazquez, but had not met the other man before. The men forced their way into Matthews' apartment. Velazquez was armed with a knife while the other man was armed with a bicycle chain, police said. Velazquez began to accuse Matthews of having relations with his girlfriend and said he was going to kill him, police said. At some point, Matthews was able to grab a hunting knife he kept in the apartment.
The two fought, and Matthews managed to stab Velazquez multiple times in self-defense, police said. The second man began to hit Matthews with the bike chain, but eventually retreated and ran out the door. Upon arrival, officers found Velazquez lying outside with multiple stab wounds to his torso and neck area. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition, but is expected to survive. He has been charged with armed burglary and attempted homicide and will be transported to the county jail upon his release from the hospital. Matthews was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries inflicted by the bicycle chain, but was later released. The second suspect is described as a white man, 30- to 35-years old, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds.
