St. Pete man killed, passenger hurt in single-car crash

A St. Petersburg man was killed early this morning and a passenger was seriously injured after he lost control of his car and crashed into a utility pole.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 62-year-old William Ray Elliott was driving a 1976 Chevrolet Corvette northbound on 34th Street North, north of 46th Avenue North, in the inside lane just after midnight when he lost control for unknown reasons.

The FHP said Elliott ran off the road and struck a utility pole, then struck two parked cars in the Hilltop Research Facility parking lot before overturning and colliding with another utility pole.

Both Elliott, and a passenger, 50-year-old Gina Molina Abella of St. Petersburg, were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the car, the FHP said.

Elliott died at the scene and Abella is hospitalized in serious condition, the FHP said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the FHP said.
