A Clearwater man was charged in the death of his girlfriend Sunday after he ran from the house to a store to notify authorities.
Alexander Richardson, 24, of 2368 Hillcreek Circle E., was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Josephine Austria, 51, Clearwater police said.
Richardson, who lived at the Hillcreek Circle address with Austria, also was charged with using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
Just after 1 a.m., police were called to the residence after Richardson ran to a convenience store on McMullen Booth Road and told the clerk he had shot his girlfriend, police said. Richardson gave initial responders the same report when he returned to the house.
Richardson and Austria were holding a birthday party for a friend, police said. At one point, with a few guests still at the house, Richardson came out of the bathroom, and said that Austria was bleeding and she needed help.
He then ran from the house to the convenience store.
One of the guests saw Austria was bleeding from the head and was unresponsive, and then called 911, police said.
