A 40-year-old woman faces a murder charge after she told police she intentionally rammed the back of another car Monday in a bid to kill herself and a toddler, Clearwater police said.
Tiffany Drake, 40, of St. Petersburg, faces charges of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery.
About 10:33 a.m. Monday, Clearwater police responded to a traffic crash where a car struck the back of a stopped Chevrolet Malibu belonging to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority at Keene and Druid roads.
Drake, the driver of the car, then made comments about trying to kill herself and a 2-year-old boy who was a passenger, police said.
Detectives determined that Drake accelerated, reaching up to 50 mph, before intentionally ramming the rear of the PSTA car, police said. Drake was taken to the hospital, then arrested and charged after she was released.
The child was taken to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg as a precaution and will be released to a family member.
The driver of the PSTA vehicle, David Dunbar, 61, suffered minor injuries. His passenger, Daniel McSweeney, 51, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
