A 66-year-old man was shot in St. Petersburg when he tried to fight off a would-be purse snatcher who attacked the woman he was with, police said.
St. Petersburg police responded to 3212 33rd Ave. N. at around 1:22 p.m. and found the man with gunshot wounds to his chest and arm. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The victim and a 65-year-old woman were leaving their home for a doctor’s appointment when a man approached them on a bicycle, produced a handgun and began hitting the woman in the head with it while pulling at her purse, police said.
The other man picked up a shovel in an effort to defend the woman, and was shot by the suspect, police said.
The suspect fled without the woman’s purse, going east on 33rd Avenue N., police said.
The woman was treated for a minor injury to her head, police said.
The suspect is described as a black male, 18 to 23 years old, standing 5-foot-10 and 145 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark flannel shirt over a dark t-shirt. He was riding a turquoise beach cruiser type of bicycle, which may have fenders on it, police said.
