Pinellas kids can get free checkups, supplies before school starts

CLEARWATER - Ahead of Pinellas County students returning to school Aug. 19, parents have plenty of opportunities to get free school supplies and immunizations for their children. Students can get free physicals by appointment at Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg and Northeast High School in St. Petersburg from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, until Aug. 1. Physicals at Northeast will only be offered until Wednesday. Parents must be present for exams and bring their children's immunization records. The St. Petersburg Health Center, 205 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N., St Petersburg, and the Mid County Health Center, 8751 Ulmerton Rd., Largo, also are offering free- and low-cost physicals, by appointment, Monday through Friday. A number of back-to-school fairs will offer health screenings and free school supplies, though all require prior registration:
. Aug. 1, For The Health of It! at Union Academy Family Center, 401 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Tarpon Springs: Free school and sports physicals, backpacks, healthy meals and other giveaways will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. . Aug. 3, Health Fair at North Greenwood Recreation Complex, 900 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Clearwater: Free school physicals, backpacks and other school supplies and lunch available from 8 a.m. to noon. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or adult, and Spanish translators will be available to assist families. . Aug. 3, Back-To-School Care Fair at Enoch Davis Recreation Center, 1111 18th Ave. S., St. Petersburg: Free physicals, dental exams, vision and diabetes screenings, immunizations, backpacks with school supplies, bicycle safety training and helmets from 8 a.m. to noon. . Aug. 10, Operation Backpack at First United Methodist Church of Tarpon Springs, 501 E. Tarpon Ave., Tarpon Springs: Free backpacks, school supplies, games, haircuts, physicals and lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. . Aug. 10, Fair at St. Petersburg College Health Education Center, 7200 66th St. N., Pinellas Park: Free fair for students 19 and younger for school and sports participation exams, immunizations, hearing and vision screenings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. .
