Out-of-control SUV reverses into Clearwater home, police say
A 34-year-old Clearwater man lost control of his SUV and drove in reverse through a neighborhood before crashing into a home Friday evening, police said. Michael Richardson was traveling west on Bellrose Drive North in a 2000 Honda Passport just after 6 p.m. when he lost control and crashed into a house at 1650 Bellrose Drive North, said Elizabeth Watts, spokeswoman for the Clearwater police. Richardson then put the SUV in reverse and drove across the home's driveway and lawn while traveling east on Bellrose Drive, Watts said. He lost control again and drove over the south curb into yards and a mailbox at 1657 Bellrose Drive North, Watts said. Richardson continued driving in reverse and crossed over the north curb over another lawn in into a concrete planter at 1668 Bellrose Drive North, Watts said. The SUV finally came to rest after crashing through an unoccupied bedroom at the home, Watts said.Richardson was taken to a hospital with what were described as non life-threatening injuries, Watts said. Police estimate the damage at $15,200. Police continue to investigate.
