Clearwater man accused of raping stroke victim in nursing home
CLEARWATER - A 70-year-old man was booked this morning on a charge of sexually assaulting a stroke victim who can’t communicate while both were at a Largo nursing home last year. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office charged Vincent Paoella, who lives at 15777 Bolesta Road in Clearwater, with sexual battery on a person who is physically helpless. He is being held at the Pinellas County Jail, with bail set at $50,000. Paoella was a resident of the East Bay Rehabilitation Center, at 4470 East Bay Drive, when on Oct. 24 he assaulted a woman who was also living there, according to court documents made available today. A certified nursing assistant saw Paoella go into the woman’s room about 6 p.m. and notified two staff members, who went in and found Paoella sexually molesting her, the documents state. When confronted, Paoella appeared startled and almost fell over a dresser as he left the room, according to the documents. He later told a Largo police officer he was wrong to have gone into the woman’s room and couldn’t explain why he did what he did, the documents say. The woman suffered a severe stroke several years ago and can’t communicate. “At the time of the offense, the victim was physically helpless to resist and would not have been able to give consent to the sexual act,” according to the documents.
