ST. PETERSBURG — A man surrendered at his attorney’s office Monday to face charges that he shot a man during a brawl at a south St. Petersburg club, police said.
Artez Hooker, 32, of 1733 Sixth St. S., was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Doncaro Keion Small.
Small, 32, of 162 38th Ave. S.E., died at a hospital Saturday, five days after the shooting. Officers were dispatched to the Hollywood Nites Club, 1201 Martin Luther King St. S., about 1 a.m. June 16, after receiving reports of a brawl involving 20 to 30 people, police said. By the time officers arrived, the brawl was finished. A number of people still were present, but not much information was coming from them, police said.
A short time later, Small showed up at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso, police said. Small was wounded during the brawl at the club and, after the shooting, drove himself to the hospital, St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz said. He went to surgery, and the initial prognosis was that he would survive.
Early Saturday, Small suffered a medical episode at the hospital and died. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to make a final determination as to the cause of death.
Witnesses identified Hooker.
