Altercation involving ax handle leaves man dead in St. Pete
St. Petersburg police are investigating a fight over a traffic dispute in front of St. Anthony's Hospital early today that has left one man dead. About 2:48 a.m. today, officers responded to a call of two men fighting in front of the hospital at 1201 5th Ave. N., police said. Officers found Teddy Eugene Huff, 59, unconscious on the street. Kevin D. Parkhurst, 24, told officers he was riding his bicycle when a delivery van driven by Huff, of 100 73rd Ave. N., Apt. 114, St. Petersburg, cut him off while going eastbound on 5th Avenue North in the westbound lanes. The two men argued and Huff threatened Parkhurst with an ax handle, police said. The two struggled over the handle, and Parkhurst punched Huff in the face.Parkhurst then told Huff he was calling police. Huff put the ax handle back in the van, but then stumbled and fell backward, striking his head on the pavement, according to police. Officers found Huff unconscious with no apparent pulse and he was transported to St. Anthony's, where he subsequently pronounced dead, police said. Parkhurst was interviewed by homicide detectives at police headquarters. No charges have been filed, police said. In a preliminary report, the Medical Examiner's Office told detectives Huff's injuries were consistent with his fall and there also are indications that he had medical issues that might have contributed to his death.
