Teen driver killed in Port Richey crash, troopers say

A 16-year-old boy died Friday afternoon after he lost control of his minivan and crashed into a tree. Three passengers in the vehicle who attend Ridgewood High School in New Port Richey were injured, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kevin Monaco, of Port Richey, was driving a 1996 Dodge Caravan south on Lake Forest Circle in Port Richey just before 3 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve near Forest Lake Drive. He drove off the roadway and crashed into a tree, causing the Dodge to catch fire, FHP said.

Monaco, who is home schooled, died at the scene, FHP said.

Jamie Florio, a passenger in the front seat, was transported to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.

Passenger Michael Morgan, 17, of New Port Richey, was listed in serious condition and passenger Megan Kahn, 16, of Port Richey, suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to Bayonet Point Medical Center.

Alcohol doesn’t appear to have contributed to the crash. Everyone was wearing a seat belt except Kahn, who was a passenger in the back seat along with Morgan, FHP said.

The case remains under investigation.
