Tampa man killed in Zephyrhills skydiving accident

An experienced, 50-year-old skydiver was killed around 1 p.m. Saturday in a landing accident at Skydive City in Zephyrhills, David “TK” Hayes, the facility’s general manager, said in a news release.

Keith Murray, of Tampa, died around 1 p.m. while performing a practice jump with three other skydivers and a videographer, Hayes said.

Murray deployed his parachute normally, but he appeared to have initiated a turn too low to the ground and hit a pond in the landing area at “a very high rate of speed,” Hayes said. Several local skydivers, some of them paramedics, responded immediately, but he could not be revived and later died at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, Hayes said.

Murray had completed about 900 jumps at Skydive City, said Hayes, adding that Murray started the sport in 2009.

The Zephyrhills Police Department is investigating, Hayes said. No other information was immediately available.
