Suspect in custody in fatal Zephyrhills shooting

ZEPHYRHILLS — A 26-year-old man was killed by a gunshot to the stomach after arguing with the shooter’s mother Monday morning, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said. Joshua Moore was flown to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Arrested and charged with second-degree murder was David Brian Usry, 35, who lived with Moore at 36008 Valleybrook Ave., where the incident happened around 9:15 a.m. Monday, records said.

Moore had been arguing with Usry’s mother, but when the argument ended, she drove away, the sheriff’s office said.

Usry then started a separate argument with Moore and shot him, the sheriff’s office said.

A man who answered the door at the Valleybrook address said he could not comment on the case, as the investigation is ongoing, but he acknowledged that the incident happened in the front yard.

Valleybrook is a narrow dirt road north of State Road 54. The area is a maze of similar roads north of the Zephyr Ridge community. Many of the properties are surrounded by locked chain-link fences.

Ryan Daniels, who lives a few doors down, said he was asleep when the shooting happened.

“I have guns, too, and if I had heard anything, I would have gone to investigate,” he said.

Daniels, who has lived in the neighborhood over 10 years, said people in the neighborhood generally keep to themselves, although there will be “occasional idiots who tear up the road with four-wheelers.”

He said he has not spoken at length with the people who live at 36008 Valleybrook, but he said they moved in about a year ago.

“Since they’ve been there, they’ve maintained the property and cleaned up the house real well,” Daniels said. “You should have seen it before.”

Usry was being held in the Land O’ Lakes Jail Monday, but bail information was not available.
