Skydiving accident kills 60-year-old
ZEPHYRHILLS - A New Year's Day skydiving accident that killed a 60-year-old Gulfport woman is under investigation, the Zephyrhills Police Department reported Tuesday. The victim was identified as Theresa Elaine McLaughlin, a jumper with about 15 years of experience and 600 to 700 jumps to her credit, Lt. Derek Brewer of the police department said. The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Skydive City, 4241 Sky Dive Lane. A preliminary investigation indicated there may have been an equipment malfunction."It looks like there was some sort of issue with her chute," Brewer said. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office also are involved in the investigation, he said. An Associated Press report said McLaughlin was a doctor at Suncoast Medical Clinic in St. Petersburg.
