ZEPHYRHILLS — Skydive City will host two major canopy piloting events this year.
Skydive City will host the national championships of canopy piloting, in conjunction with the United States Parachute Association. Skydive City hosted the event in 2013 and it drew 79 competitors from around the U.S. and the world.
The dates for the competition are May 21-23, but training and other local competitions will be held in May prior to the championship event, according to Skydive City.
Also, the International Parachuting Commission has selected Skydive City and the United States Parachute Association to host the World Meet of Canopy Piloting Nov. 1-8. About 125 competitors from around the world are expected to compete.
Canopy Piloting, commonly called “swooping,” is a growing part of the skydiving scene with competitors flying ultrahigh performance parachutes at speeds of 80 to 100 mph, diving at the ground to run courses for distance, speed and accuracy.
