DADE CITY — A 28-year-old woman was arrested and charged with child neglect on Friday after her shoeless 2-year-old daughter was found wandering along busy U.S. 301 in Dade City, a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office report said.
Monica Annette Anthrop, of 37745 Atwater Road, Dade City, was arrested after residents in the area prevented the girl, clad only in shorts, from walking into traffic, the report said.
The incident happened about 3:35 p.m. Friday at U.S. 301 and Gould Road, north of Dade City.
People who found the girl called the sheriff’s office, and Anthrop arrived at the scene about 10 minutes after a deputy, the report said.
Anthrop said that her daughter usually plays at a neighbor’s house and that she checks on her daughter about every 30 minutes, the report said.
The neighbor told investigators that the young girl often comes over to play with her grandson, but that she either walks over alone or with her 7-year-old sister.
On Friday, the girl and her sister left the neighbor’s residence around 3 p.m., the report said. About 45 minutes later, Anthrop came to the neighbor’s house, looking for her daughter, the report said.
The neighbor told investigators that Anthrop’s lack of supervision over her daughters “is an ongoing issue,” the report said.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were called in March after Anthrop’s 2-year-old daughter was found “walking around naked and unsupervised.” Anthrop was not arrested at that time.
Anthrop was being held in the Land O’ Lakes Jail on Monday with bail set at $2,500.
