Resident may revive Aripeka post office

ARIPEKA — Lifelong Aripeka resident Carl Norfleet has purchased the town’s post office in an effort to bring mail service back to the rural northeast Pasco community.

The U.S. Postal Service vacated the 50-year-old building on Sept. 13 when its lease expired. The agency could not reach terms for a new five-year lease with property owner Louise Geiger, who is Norfleet’s cousin.

Norfleet, who ran a general store in Aripeka most of his life, said he and Geiger agreed on a sale price within days. The transaction should be complete by Friday, he said.

He hopes to resume negotiations with the USPS immediately. Aripeka residents do not receive home mail delivery. Their post office boxes were moved to the Hudson Post Office, seven miles away.
