Principals to shuffle at two Pasco middle schools
LAND O' LAKES - A switch in principals is about to affect two schools. Phillip Kupczyk has resigned as principal at Seven Springs Middle and will be replaced by Chris Dunning, principal at Paul R. Smith Middle in Holiday. The Pasco County School Board is scheduled to vote on Dunning's transfer at its 6 p.m. meeting Tuesday. No new principal for Paul R. Smith Middle has been chosen, but discussions for finding a replacement are under way, said Beth Brown, the district's executive director for secondary schools."That's a conversation (Assistant Superintendent Tina) Tiede and I are having with our superintendent," Brown said. "We are looking at the principal pool and all our available talent." Kupczyk, principal at Seven Springs Middle for just over a year, cited personal reasons for his resignation, she said. He expressed an interest in returning to the classroom and will teach math at Schwettman Education Center, an alternative school in New Port Richey, Brown said. "He felt it was a better fit for his personal life," she said. This isn't the first time Kupczyk has resigned a principal position. He previously served as a principal at Hudson Middle, but in 2010 stepped down for health reasons and was transferred to the assistant principal job at Seven Springs Middle. He was promoted to principal at Seven Springs in May 2011. Dunning, who starts his new job Oct. 17, is the only principal Smith Middle has had since it opened in 2006. "It was hard for Chris to leave a school he opened," Brown said. Before becoming principal at Smith Middle, Dunning was a supervisor for three years in the school district's employee relations department Dunning's career also included stints as a teacher at Seven Springs Elementary, an assistant principal at Cotee River Elementary and principal at Calusa Elementary.
