Pasco schools set meetings on extra reading requirement

— The Pasco County School District plans informational meetings beginning this week for parents at three schools that were among the 300 lowest performing in the state for FCAT reading.

Because of new state requirements, students at those schools — Lacoochee Elementary, Cox Elementary in Dade City and Gulfside Elementary in Holiday — must have an extra hour of reading instruction each day.

For students in kindergarten through third-grade, the district will be able to incorporate the reading time into the currently scheduled school day because those students were already in school for more total hours than the state mandated.

The fourth and fifth-grade students at all three schools, though, will see their school time extended an extra 50 minutes each day to meet the requirement.

Lacoochee and Cox each will have one parent meeting. Gulfside will have one meeting at the school and a second one at a neighborhood apartment complex for parents who don’t have transportation to get to the school.

The meeting times and locations are:

Lacoochee Elementary — 6 p.m. Thursday, at the school, 38815 Cummer Road, Dade City.

Cox Elementary — 6 p.m. Aug. 11, at the school, 37615 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Dade City.

Gulfside Elementary — 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the school, 2329 Anclote Blvd., Holiday.

Gulfside Elementary — 6 p.m. Thursday, at Weston Oaks Apartments, 1251 Weston Oaks Drive, Holiday
