DADE CITY — The Pasco Pirates football team faced off against the Ridgewood High School Rams in a preseason game the evening of Aug. 22 at W.F. Edwards Stadium at Pasco High School.
It was the first game of the 2014-15 season, although it does not count toward official season standings. The Pirates won, 21-0.
Coach Tom McHugh said the win is not indicative of the Rams’ abilities.
“They’re a lot better than people think. They are a good team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave everybody in their district a run for the money,” McHugh said. Ridgewood is not in the same district, so the Pirates won’t face the Rams again unless they both make it to the playoffs.
McHugh, in his eighth year as coach, said the Pasco High team has been working hard through the heat and beginning of school activities.
It’s hard to get a read on a season based on the first game, he said. “I’ll be able to tell more Friday.”
Tonight’s first regular season game will be against the Sunlake High School Seahawks. The Pirates are fielding about 60 players, although a couple are injured, McHugh said. Senior Grant Starling will start at quarterback for the second year.
