Man who was shot Saturday in New Port Richey dies
A man who was shot in the head Saturday in New Port Richey died Sunday, according to the Pasco Sheriff's Office. Jerome Leake, 22, of the 9700 block of Richwood Lane, Port Richey, was declared brain dead Saturday evening and was taken off life support at 3:59 p.m. Sunday. He died a short time later. Leake was inside the bedroom of Mathew Santos, 21, of 5415 Tilson Drive, New Port Richey when he was shot in the head, deputies said. Santos told deputies he was in his bedroom just after 12 p.m. Saturday and was holding his .38-caliber, semi-automatic pistol when Leake asked for the gun. When Santos refused, Leake reached for the weapon, deputies said.Santos fired once, hitting Leake above his right ear and the bullet exited above Leak's left ear, deputies said. Leake had been at Santos' house for 20 minutes before the shooting took place, according to the arrest report. Santos, who was originally charged with aggravated battery, told deputies he shot Leake to protect himself. Additional charges are likely, according to the sheriff's office. Santos remains in the Land O' Lakes Jail with a $500,000 bond.
