Deputies: Pasco shooter was victim of past road rage
A man who shot his attacker on the side of a road in Pasco County on Saturday afternoon had been beaten during a similar event in 2011, deputies said. This time, when a man began hitting John Michael O’Mara, 75, through an open driver-side window as he was stopped on a Land O’ Lakes street, O’Mara pulled a gun and shot his attacker in the right shoulder. Deputies have not released the name of the man, who was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said. O’Mara was stopped just after 5 p.m. in the northbound turn lane on Preakness Boulevard at Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes when the man approached, deputies said. After the incident, O’Mara returned to his Land O’ Lakes home and contacted police, deputies said. The sheriff’s office referred to O’Mara as a victim and the other man as a suspect. Deputies continue to investigate. On May 11, 2011, O’Mara was the victim of another attack after he was followed home and assaulted. O’Mara was driving on Coconut Groove Road when Robert Viggiano began following closely in a van. O’Mara, according to Viggiano, stomped on his brakes and then continued home. Viggiano followed him home where the two began to argue. At some point, Viggiano pushed O’Mara to the ground. Viggiano entered a plea of nolo contender and was sentenced to one year of probation, 100 hours of community service and had to pay O’Mara $100 in restitution. Viggiano was also made to pay $625 in court fees.
