Boat parade lights up Cotee River for Christmas
NEW PORT RICHEY - Thousands gathered along the Cotee River wall Saturday to watch the 2012 River Lights Boat Parade, hosted by Greater New Port Richey Main Street. More than 20 kayaks and boats were decked out in elaborate displays of Christmas lights, inflatable snowmen and characters such as Snoopy and The Bumble, an abominable snow monster from the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" TV special. As the lighted kayaks and boats made their way up the river, escorted by a police boat, Christmas music played and children ran through the park with glow sticks and light-up wands. The winners of the parade in the kayak category are Jan Mallett, first place; Tommy Summers, second; and Brian Taylor, third.In the boat category, Russel Denise won first place, Antonios Oikonomou took second and Jeremy Buehrig took third. After the parade, families were invited to stay at Sim's Park to watch a free showing of "The Polar Express."
