2-year-old boy’s foot amputated by lawn mower in rural Pasco

A 2-year-old boy’s leg was accidently amputated by a lawn mower operated by his mother Saturday morning in rural Pasco County, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. on the 17600 block of Orange Drive, south of Spring Hill, authorities said.

The mother was riding a commercial zero-turn riding mower and said her son was running toward her, according to authorities. She attempted to shut off the mower but couldn’t stop in time, they said.

The boy fell as he approached and his leg went under the mower, authorities said. The leg was severed between the knee and ankle, county spokesman Doug Tobin said.

Pasco County Fire Rescue packed the limb on ice, and the child was transported to Tampa General Hospital via BayFlite as a trauma alert, Tobin said.

The child’s condition was not available.

The names of the mother and child were not released.

The accident was reminiscent of an April 2013 incident in which a 2-year-old girl in Palm Harbor lost both legs below her knees when her father accidentally backed over her on a riding mower. Ireland Nugent, now 4, was fitted with prosthetics and has had multiple surgeries and ongoing rehabilitation.
