Westchase Rec Center to offer morning workout for adults

TAMPA – Jill Meyer has spent much of her life as a personal trainer, and it was in that role at the Westchase Recreation Center that she noticed parents dropping their kids off at the adjacent Westchase Elementary School – only to be stuck in the snarled traffic.

Thus, Westchase FitClub was born.

Westchase FitClub will start up at the Rec Center on Jan. 14 and continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8:45. It’s only $5 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. Extra perks include a free body fat measurement and tracking, working out for free if participants bring a friend for the first time, education on nutrition, and more.

Meyer is a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer who teaches at the Northwest YMCA, the Waters Avenue Gold’s Gym, and also does personal workouts.

She thought it would be a great idea for parents to drop off their kids at Westchase Elementary and stop by to workout a few times a week. Anyone who’s ever tried to get out of the school parking lot and onto Linebaugh Avenue knows they can sit there and wait forever – or simply leave the car and walk to the Rec Center.

“I wanted to try something new,” Meyer said. “Something different. It’s cheap and fun and it keeps me fresh with the community.”

She calls it a “boot camp,” but she said she’ll work with people at every level of exercise intensity. She can turn it up or down to fit any level, but she said the one thing that will be in common for everyone is that it will be fun.

“I want to try to bring a sense of community to Westchase and the parents at the school especially,” Meyer said. “We’ll be open to all ages, men and women, no matter if they exercise a lot or have never exercised.”

Meyer moved to Tampa with her husband from Kansas City 18 months ago. She loves living in Tampa and is ready to make an impact.

“This is such a great community and I am really happy to be a part of it,” she said. “I hope to be here for a long time.”
