TAMPA – Every penny counts.
It doesn’t take a large check with lots of zeros, said Laurie Holmes, a volunteer with the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. The YMCA is hosting its annual fundraising campaign, soliciting money to finance the many programs that are offered by the YMCA.
Holmes, who works out at the Northwest Hillsborough County YMCA, among other places, lives in the Tampa area most of the year. She also has a residence in Michigan, but loves to volunteer at the Y and is interested in the development of children throughout the area.
“It’s our annual campaign to support the local kids in the community,” Holmes said. “People can give any time of the year, but this is a big time. It doesn’t matter how much because people can help in so many ways.”
She said she has seen youngsters give pocket change to help out. Every little bit helps.
“Anything anyone wants to give is great,” Holmes said. “Some people think that if they can’t write a large check than it might be an embarrassment, but that’s not the case. Everything helps.”
She is concerned with issues such as childhood obesity and well care. She also wants to help make sure that the YMCA stays a vital part of the community.
“They are so much more than just a gym,” Holmes said. “They care about you. The body, the mind, the spirit, they all support each other. Nobody is ever turned away and that comes from the donations we receive.”
