Lutz women’s club takes over fire department’s scholarship fund

The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Women’s Club has been selected by the Lutz Volunteer Fire Department to serve as administrator of its new Lutz Volunteer Memorial Fireman’s Scholarship Fund.

The Lutz volunteer area fire house was decommissioned and replaced by Hillsborough County firefighters by county mandate last year.

The Lutz department’s board of directors felt that after more than 60 years of service to the community the best legacy they could leave would be an endowed scholarship fund. A minimum of two annual scholarships of at least $2,500 each will be awarded to Lutz residents, with the criteria being that recipients be selected by the women’s club scholarship committee, that they be residents of Lutz and attend (or will enroll in) a fully accredited university or college.

The endowment fund will be approximately $266,000, but individuals and/or businesses may continue to donate.

The first two recipients are Mary Canton and Dylan Waddle, who attend University Of Central Florida and Pasco-Hernando Community College, respectively.
