Again this year, area residents plan to rally under the stars one evening next week as a show of community solidarity against crime.
National Night Out will be held Tuesday at the Family Recreation Complex, 6610 Whiteway Drive. Festivities begin at 6 p.m.
The 29th annual event in Temple Terrace has been recognized as one of the best in the state, city spokesman Michael Dunn says in a news release. This year's program will feature games, free food, displays, emergency vehicles, a canine unit, SWAT team demonstrations and other fun activities.
The event is designed to strengthen police-community partnerships in the fight against neighborhood crime.
About 300 children, parents, service club representatives and city officials turned out last year for the city celebration of the event sanctioned by the National Association of Town Watch and aimed at deterring crime in communities throughout the country.
Target is the title sponsor of this year's event. The national retailer will provide giveaways of items including school supplies. There also will be prizes such as bicycles and backpacks.
The event will conclude with a flashlight walk through the neighborhood surrounding the recreation center, with the goal of demonstrating that residents are united against crime.
