New Tampa Players bring Broadway to Saddlebrook
WESLEY CHAPEL - A local thespian troupe might have the perfect opportunity for musical theater aficionados who cannot travel to New York City to see the world’s most talented performing artists. On May 11 the New Tampa Players will present Broadway Comes to Tampa at the Saddlebrook Resort and Spa, 5700 Saddlebrook Way in Wesley Chapel. The 14th annual fundraising black-tie optional event in the grand pavilion will feature a host of actors, singers, musicians and composers who have played in numerous Broadway hits. Performers include stage actor Danny Zolli, best known for his portrayal of Jesus, Judas and high priest Annas in “Jesus Christ Superstar”; Broadway star Capathia Jenkins, whose repertoire of performances include “Martin Short — Fame Becomes Me” and “Caroline or Change”; and actor/songstress Carter Calvert, who appeared in the Tony-nominated “It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues” and Broadway’s national tour of “Cats.”Also in the lineup of musical talents are acclaimed composer/lyricist Neil Berg; saxophonist Greg Wall whose “From the Belly of Abraham” release was named one of 10 best CDs of 2002 by Jazz Times magazine; actor, singer and producer Robert Evan who played a lead role in Broadway’s “Jekyll & Hyde”; and singer/actor Kate Shindle, whose many credits include “Legally Blonde,” “Cabaret” and “Elsewhere.” The event starts at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and silent auction. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $175 each or $1,750 for a table of 10.
