Newsome runners get scholarships from FishHawk club
LITHIA - Two Newsome High School students recently won scholarships from the FishHawk Road Runners Club: Brianna Jackson and Lars Benner. Both are outstanding students as well as team captains and will run for the University of Tampa, said Steve Dunn, president of the running club and owner of Hit the Trails, a specialty store for runners. Jackson graduated with a 6.0 grade-point average and "battled a few injuries during high school but never missed participating during track season," said Dunn. Benner, with a 6.56 grade-point average, is "an encouraging-type person," said Dunn. "He improved every year and led by example."Since the scholarship began in 2008, $9,500 has been awarded to 10 students, three from Bloomingdale, two from Riverview and five from Newsome. Money raised through races hosted by the FishHawk Road Runners Club is donated to local schools, with the exception of the funds dispersed through the annual scholarship. The club sends scholarship information each fall to coaches at Bloomingdale, Brandon, Durant, Newsome and Riverview high schools. Interested students are referred to the club website for more details: www.fishhawkrunning.com/Scholarship. Send community news to Barbara Routen at Neighbors@tampabay.rr.com.
