TAMPA — County and city firefighters were on the scene of a three-alarm fire Thursday night at a warehouse that appeared to contain thousands of mattresses.
Two crews from Hillsborough Fire Rescue and one from Tampa Fire Rescue fought the blaze after sawing holes in the building at 5226 E Hillsborough Ave. so water could better reach the flames.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m., said Corey Dierdorff, a spokesman for Hillsborough Fire Rescue.
No one was injured and the fire was about 80 percent contained, he said, but crews expected to spend several hours at the scene because mattress fires are difficult to put out. Some stacks contained as many as 15 mattresses, he said.
He said officials did not know the cause.
The 25,000-square-foot building is rented by three companies, including Florida Sleep Products, Dierdorff said.
