Several injured after crash involving PSTA bus

Several people were injured Thursday morning in a head-on crash involving a Pinellas County bus and a sport utility vehicle on 94th Avenue North, St. Petersburg police said.

Officials said about 9 a.m., a 2005 Acura MDX driven by Ruth Hoffelmeyer, 57, 250 89th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, was eastbound on Frontage Road, approached a slight bend in the roadway when she likely suffered a medical episode. The vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck the bus about 9:26 a.m. The impact knocked the Acura back about 30 feet, police said.

Hoffelmeyer was taken to Bayfront Health St. Pete, where she remains in critical condition, police said.

Seven of the 15 people on the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus, which was being driven by Robert Davis, 48, 1597 54 Ave. S., were transported to a hospital with various injuries, but none appeared serious, police said. The PSTA driver was not injured.

Police said 94th Avenue was closed for several hours between Gandy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
