A Plant City man was killed Tuesday night after he drove into the back of a dump truck that was jutting out into the roadway after it had run out of gas.
Deputies say John Carter Phillips, 53, was driving a 1996 Nissan westbound on Bruton Road around 8:30 p.m. when he ran into the back of the dump truck.
Part of the dump truck was in the travel lane as Charles D. Middleton, 30, of Dover, was putting gasoline into it while it was broken down on the north side of Bruton Road, deputies say.
Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies say, and Middleton and an unidentified passenger in the Nissan are hospitalized in critical condition.
Charges against Middleton are pending, deputies say.
