Four seriously hurt in Pasco crash involving horse trailer

Four people were seriously injured Monday night when a tire blew on a trailer carrying four horses, closing Interstate 75 in Pasco County for an hour.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 36-year-old Rex Keene Jr., of San Antonio, was driving the trailer northbound in the outside lane on I-75, south of State Road 52, just before 7 p.m. when a tire blew and he lost control.

The trailer jack-knifed and crashed into a 2000 Toyota SUV, which 56-year-old Marcia Patterson of Largo was driving in the inside lane, the FHP said.

The impact caused the Toyota to overturn several times, while the trailer traveled into the center median and collided with the guardrail.

Four people were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries — Keene and 6-year-old Rex Keene III, and Patterson and 10-year-old Max Patterson.

The four horses being transported were not injured, the FHP said.

The crash closed northbound lanes on I-75 for one hour.
