Tampa man dies on birthday motorcycle ride
TAMPA - David Troy Hood wanted to celebrate his birthday on Sunday with only one other person, his daughter said. So he and girlfriend Amanda Rae Sarmiento took a ride on his motorcycle. “He and Amanda were just doing their own little thing,” said Brittany Hood, 23. Around 9 p.m. Sunday, the couple was on their way home, going north on Causeway Boulevard and approaching the bridge that spans McKay Bay.Police said David Hood, 41, and Sarmiento, 31, were going at a high rate of speed. After cresting the bridge, the motorcycle collided with a much slower 2012 VIP scooter driven by Angel Felipe, police said. Felipe, 51, of Tampa, died at the scene, according to Tampa Fire Rescue. Hood and Sarmiento, both of Tampa, were thrown off the motorcycle, police said. The couple was taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, where Hood died a short time later. Sarmiento was listed in critical condition today. Brittany Hood said Sarmiento suffered severe head trauma and swelling of the brain. “She’s made a little bit of progress,” Hood said. Hood said her father was a motorcycle enthusiast for as long as she can remember. “He’s always had motorcycles,” she said. “It’s always been an adrenaline rush for him.”
